Abstract

The article examines the psychological interpretation of the “little man” figure
in the works of A. P. Chekhov. Using the short stories “The Death of a Government
Clerk,” “The Man in a Case,” and “The Grasshopper” as examples, the study analyzes
the writer’s mastery in revealing the inner world of his characters through laconic
style, subtext, and artistic detail. The research substantiates Chekhov’s innovative
approach to the “little man” concept — portraying him not merely as a social victim
but as an individual with a complex inner life.
