Abstract

Water scarcity in Uzbekistan is a critical challenge that affects agriculture,
economic stability, and sustainable development. With approximately 90% of the
country’s freshwater withdrawals used for irrigation, the growing demand for water,
combined with outdated infrastructure and environmental crises like the Aral Sea
disaster, exacerbates the situation. This paper investigates the economic impacts of
water scarcity, focusing on agriculture and industry. It examines water management
reforms, including the introduction of water-saving technologies, new water tariffs,
and future projections for water use efficiency. The analysis emphasizes the need for
continued investment in infrastructure, adoption of sustainable agricultural practices,
and regional cooperation to address the water crisis. While progress has been made,
further reforms are necessary to ensure long-term economic resilience and food
security in Uzbekistan.
